Art Center Entertainment Design Portfolio - Spring 2018 (Accepted)

A reimagining of the novel Sabriel by Garth Nix, in the style of feature animation.

While adapting Nix's world, I learned so much about the process of designing an animated movie. Fair warning to Old Kingdom fans, I took quite a few liberties with the source material.

I worked on this project from early April to late September 2017. Check out this project's reference images and research here. If you're interested in applying to ArtCenter, feel free to comment with any questions!

UPDATE 10/19/17: I got in Entertainment Design!

I post all my newer work to instagram: @joshwongart

  3. This is amazing! It's a favourite pastime of mine to come imagine my own concepts for Sabriel's world but nothing so in depth as this. If you ever find yourself working on a film of the books I'd like in. I was too young to make Lord of the Rings and whilst this is somewhat smaller, I think a live action in this world would be amazing and I'd like to help make it. 9. Hi! I'm also another person hoping to get into entertainment design, and I'm in awe of how expansive yet detailed your portfolio is, and how much meticulous research you did to really understand the book. If possible, may i ask to see how you structured your notes on Sabriel? I'm also writing down notes on a different book that I'm basing my portfolio on, but that glimpse of the excel spreadsheet you made for getting to know the book is so detailed yet concise that I feel mine are lacking, and I'd like to find a better way to frame my own research so it's not so haphazard.
Any advice is greatly appreciated! And congrats on getting into the program, I feel like it was rightly deserved :) This portfolio is awe-inspiring

  12. Though I've read a few of Nix's books, I've only just started Sabriel (I've reached chapter 13 so far), and as I looked for related art on google I got here! man, this is amazing work. I'm completely in love with your Abhorsen raiment!

  14. This is incredible. Like, the word incredible can't do it justice. I LOVED Sabriel and Lirael as a teen and I'd love to go back to them at some point, but the books nevertheless really stuck with me as an really interesting and well-thought-out example of what non Harry Potter or LotR fantasy could be like, and your art gives so much "life" to this series. The Abhorsen raiment (even though I miss the keys!), bells, and the dead are particular standouts. I came across this by accident and I couldn't be happier about it. Amazing work!
(also, can't wait to see your older versions of Sabriel and Touchstone!)

  15. This is all amazing. The Old Kingdom series remains one of my favorites. I came across this while designing a d20 campaign based on the books and I am blown away by your art and attention to detail.

  16. Wow this is STUNNING. Why did you do this, was it to actually turn into an animated film? I really hope it turns into a film or series one day. Such beautiful work really brought to life the images in my head.

  17. This is absolutely beautiful work! I first read Sabriel way back in middle school and have loved the book ever since. I'd love to have some of your work as prints in my home. Do you have a shop?

    1. I was able to sell prints before covid (I use a print shop out of my house). If you contact me at joshwongart@gmail.com after this whole mess is over, I can print out whichever images you want. We can discuss price then.

  18. Hello, you made this ages ago so maybe it's weird to be commenting on it now after all this time, BUT I just needed to tell you how amazing this all is! I've been re-reading the Old Kingdom series lately and planning a cosplay and stumbled across this completely by accident, and I am just FLOORED by the amount of time and thought and detail you put into this entire portfolio. Your designs are brilliant, and if I had all the money in the world, I would be throwing so much at you to really make this into an animated film. Thank you for sharing your work online. It's really inspirational to me! And I would love a couple prints some day, if you ever decide to start selling them!

  19. Hey Josh!! I'm a prospective Entertainment Design student. I know it's been a long time since you've posted this but I just wanted to thank you for sharing your portfolio! I'm going to apply to Art Center in 2022, but I'm only in my brainstorming phase, as I plan to work on my portfolio during junior and senior year of high school. Honestly, until looking through your version of Sabriel, I had no idea what a good portfolio looked like. I looked through several other ED applications, and nothing stood out to me more than your portfolio. I find myself referencing it for ways to format my research and reference images. How has your experience at Art Center been so far?

    1. I no longer attend ArtCenter. I quickly realized the industry is not a good fit for my personality. The classes I took were great though, and I would recommend it to anyone who is serious about art. Email me at joshwongart@gmail.com if you have more questions.
